Swimming Pool Timers
General Information

Having your filter pump operate on a pool timer saves energy. Most pools don’t need sanitizing, filtering, and circulation 24 hours a day. Swimming pools are designed to “turn over” the water in the pool for approximately 8 hours at a time. We typically use pool timers to operate 10-14 hours per day, depending upon the efficiency of the system, the ambient air temperature, amount of sunlight and the usage that the pool receives.

Setting a Precision pool timer is simple. Inside the enclosure you’ll see a 24 hour dial. There are four “tripper pins” on the dial, two on and two off. The on tripper pin allows power to the filter pump and the other tripper pin turns the switch off, stopping power from going past the timer to the filter pump. More than one set of tripper pins allows you to run the pump in the morning and then late in the afternoon to avoid peak usage times.

Energy Efficiency Pool Tips
To get the maximum energy efficiency out of your swimming pool we suggest the following energy saving tips.
  • Check the pool timer settings and operations on a regular basis.
  • Schedule regular check-ups for your natural gas, pool/spa heaters, pool/spa pump and motor.
  • Routinely inspect thermostat settings.
  • Clean your filtration system regularly and always follow manufacturer’s instructions.

Swimming Pool Timers

By setting your swimming pool timer to operate your pump during off-peak times, you’re helping to lower the cost of energy.

How to change swimming pool timers setting

Before attempting any adjustment of your swimming pool timer switch settings you must turn off the power by opening the branch circuit breaker that serves the swimming pool timer.

  1. Turn off power by opening the circuit breaker at your electrical panel.
  2. To re-set “on” and “off” times, open the pool timer enclosure and loosen the trip pin enough to slide the tripper around the pool timer dial.
  3. Set the tripper pin (labeled “on” to the desired “on” position (a.m. or p.m.) and re-tighten tripper pin.
  4. Move the off tripper pin similarly to desired off time (a.m. or p.m.), and re-tighten tripper pin.
  5. Set time of day by turning pool timer dial clockwise until correct time (a.m. or p.m.) is in line with pool timer pointer. Do not attempt to move the pointer.
  6. Close the pool timer switch enclosure and turn the power back on.
